UNPACKING THE YOUTH POLICY ON HEALTH

Any nation world over relies on the strength and energies that young people possess. Countries tap on the health of young people for sustainable development. It is important to do deliberate programming on issues of health in particular HIV/AIDS, Cancer and Sexual and Reproductive Health. The previous Zimbabwe National Youth Policy was not comprehensive enough to address health issues for youth hence the review and the current publication of a revised one. If young people are not health development of any nation or community is compromised. Young people in various geographical locations have suffered silently mainly because there were no policy issues addressing their needs. At policy level there was no deliberate approach to mention the strategies to address youth health issues.
Health information has been available for those with access to health institutions, in urban centres and those in reach of NGOs. Young people in newly resettled farming areas, mining communities and those in the remotest parts of the country were not reached with health information. The current National Youth Policy is very clear on health issues for young people. It states that, “Health is a fundamental and cross cutting issue which has important bearing on children and youth’s wellbeing and capacity to partake in education, skills development, poverty eradication, and participation in the national economic, political and social processes”. Article 5.5 in the Youth Policy talks about health with the overall goal of promoting healthy lifestyles and personal wellbeing with particular emphasis on prevention of HIV and AIDS and promotion of reproductive health and care. The policy is expected to shake things up in the health sector making sure that young people health is made a priority.
The following objectives were proposed;
•    To address the specific health problems faced by young people which inhibit their capacity to participate in society;
•    To contribute to the reduction in the spread of STIs and HIV among the youth and mitigate their impact on the individual and society;
•    To reduce alcohol and substance abuse, and pornography among the youth;
•    To reduce the incidence of teenage and unwanted pregnancies, and the sequel of unsafe abortion;
The above objectives can only be achieved by a multi sectoral response where all organizations programming on health issues come together to address the health needs of young people.
